    What is Water Kefir?​

     

    Water Kefir is fermented sweetened water. It is a probiotic packed drink which contains beneficial enzymes, easily digestible sugars, beneficial acids, vitamins and minerals.  Water Kefir has been used for many centuries to support gastrointestinal health because it is full of healthful microbes and is a very rich source of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) - it's basically a drinkable live probiotic supplement.

    Water Kefir generally contains many more strains of bacteria and yeast (around 15) than other cultured products like yogurt or buttermilk which contain 1 or 2 strains. Gulitza et al in their study of Water Kefir in 2011 found that the bacteria and yeast generally include:

     

    • Species Lactobacillus: L. brevis, L. casei, L. hilgardii, L. hordei, L. nagelii

    • Species Leuconostoc: L. citreum, L. mesenteroides

    • Species Acetobacter: A. fabarum, A. orientalis

    • Species Streptococcus: S. lactis

    • Yeasts: Hanseniaospora valbyensis, Lachancea fermentati, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Zygotorulaspora florentina

     

    Why should I drink Water Kefir?​

     

    The gut is made up of over 500 diverse bacterial species and our general health and wellbeing is greatly impacted by the diversity and quantity of the beneficial bacteria.  Gastrointestinal health (again impacted by the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut) is important for digestion and immunity and recent studies have also linked gut health to the brain and mental health. Each person is different and we encourage you to research the advantages yourself, however the following benefits have been reported by our customers after drinking Amrita Kefir regularly:

     

    • Increased immunity

    • Weight loss / appetite suppression

    • Increased energy

    • Better digestion ​

    • Clearer skin

    NOTE: Water kefir grains and kefir itself does NOT contain Candida Albicans and has no reason to aggravate the symptoms of candida and can usually be consumed without issue. Kombucha however is NOT recommended for people with candida (yeast overgrowth), especially during flare-ups.

    How much / when should I drink Water Kefir?

     

    Most people can enjoy between one and four cups of water kefir each day without issue. Those who have not consumed any probiotic foods or drinks may choose to start with a half a cup per day and monitor the effect. (Some initial gas or bloating may be experienced as the new beneficial bacteria rebalance the gut flora).

     

    Water Kefir can be consumed at any time during the day however some may find the best benefits obtained when it is taken first thing in the morning and / or before meals. ​

    We believe that too much of anything is not a good idea - and this goes for Kefir and Kombucha as well. Our drinks are not a replacement for water. Please continue to drink water during the day and take a break from drinking fermented beverages once in a while. Listen to your body!

     

    Can children and pregnant women drink Water Kefir?

     

    As with all fermented products, Water Kefir has a small amount of alcohol (ours tested at 1.9% ABV) so we advise care is taken when giving kefir to pregnant women and small children. In countries where fermented products are part of a daily diet, children are often given Water Kefir as an alternative to sodas, however as a parent/caregiver it is your decision.

     

    Some women choose to avoid ALL alcohol when they are pregnant - if this is the case for you, you should avoid all fermented foods and drinks, including Water Kefir. Water Kefir is full of beneficial acids, enzymes, probiotics, vitamins, minerals and it aids digestion and supports the immune system.  Many of our kefir community give Water Kefir to their kids and have consumed it while pregnant and breastfeeding - it is a personal decision. You may choose to dilute Water Kefir with juice or water if you have concerns about the alcohol content but still want to enjoy the benefits. To put the alcohol content into persepective, beer is usually around 5% - 8%, wine is about 12 - 17% and spirits start at approximately 40%. Interestingly, we know people who are VERY sensitive to 'alcoholic drinks', however, they do not feel any of the sensitivity (redness, puffiness, fogginess for example) when they drink our Amrita Kefir. 

     

    Other things to consider are that Water Kefir is raw and unpasteurised. If you are avoiding these types of foods and drinks - you should not drink Water Kefir.
